Kathy Bates is an American actress and filmmaker. She was born on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Broadway productions of “Fifth of July” (1980), “Come Back to the Five and Dime,  Jimmy Dean” (1982), and “‘night. Mother” (1983–1984), for which Bates was nominated for a Tony Award, is among the many film and television projects for which she is well-known.

Is Kathy Bates Gay?

Kathy Bates is not gay, she is straight. She had a previous marriage that ended in divorce. Nevertheless, despite not being homos*xual herself, she genuinely loves the LGBTQ community and makes a great effort to be a friend to them.

In 1991, Bates wed Tony Campisi; however, the two later divorced in 1997. They had dated for six years before their breakup. There is no information indicating that Kathy is dating anyone as of yet, and she is not married.

Kathy Bates’s Early Life

Kathy Bates was born Kathleen Doyle Bates on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father, Langdon, was a mechanical engineer, and her mother, Bertye, was a housewife. Kathy went to White Station High School and grew up with Patricia and Mary, her two elder sisters.

She enrolled at Dallas’ Southern Methodist University after graduating early. Bates majored in theater while attending college, where she also belonged to the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Kathy enrolled at the William Esper Studio in 1970 after deciding to pursue an acting career in New York City.

Kathy Bates’s Personal Life

Kathy married Tony Campisi in April 1991, after 6 years together, and they divorced in 1997. Until January 2009, when Bates claimed to have been “in total remission” for over five years, the public remained unaware of her ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2003.

Is Kathy Bates Gay?

After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in July 2012, she had a double mastectomy. Kathy disclosed (in a prerecorded message) that she had lymphedema in her arms as a result of the double mastectomy two years later at the New York Walk for Lymphedema & Lymphatic Diseases.

Later that year, she started serving as chairperson of the honorary board of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network. Additionally, Bates became a lymphedema spokeswoman. In 2018, she spoke at the DC/VA Walk to Fight Lymphedema & Lymphatic Diseases and participated in Capitol Hill Lobby Day to raise awareness of the condition and increase funds for research.

She received a 2018 WebMD Health Heroes “Game Changer” Award in recognition of her commitment to spreading knowledge about lymphedema.

Kathy Bates Awards and Nominations

Following her nominations for “Primary Colors,” “About Schmidt,” and “Richard Jewell,” Bates took home the 1991 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Misery.” Her wins include Best Performance by an Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture (1991) for “Misery” and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television (1997) for “The Late Shift.”

She has received eight Golden Globe nominations. Kathy has had 14 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for “Two and a Half Men” in 2012 and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for “American Horror Story: Coven” in 2014.

Kathy was the recipient of Blockbuster Entertainment Awards for “Titanic,” “Primary Colors,” and “The Waterboy” as well as American Comedy Awards for “The Late Shift,” “Primary Colors,” and “Annie.” In addition, she has won honors from the Screen Actors Guild, National Board of Review, Online Film & Television Association, Broadcast Film Critics Association, Gold Derby, and Satellite awards.

In addition to winning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016, she also took home a François Truffaut Award from the 2006 Giffoni Film Festival and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 Women Film Critics Circle Awards.
