George Strait’s Early Life
On May 18, 1952, George Harvey Strait Junior Senior was born in Poteet, Texas. George grew up with two siblings on his father’s 2,000-acre cattle ranch in Pearsall, where he was also involved in farmhand work and animal care from a young age. His parents separated while he was in the fourth grade.
When Strait was in high school, he started to take an interest in music and formed a rock and roll band with his peers. Country musicians like Hank Thompson, Lefty Frizzell, and Merle Haggard soon won him over, despite his initial attraction to bands like the Beatles. He frequently went to see live country music events throughout Texas.
Following his high school graduation, he joined the Army and was assigned to Hawaii. Once there, he and his wife, Norma, welcomed their first kid into the world and he joined a country band approved by the Army. He was in the Army for four years in all, rising to the rank of Corporal. He continued his post-secondary studies at Southwest Texas State University after receiving an honorable discharge, finally earning a degree in agriculture.

In 1971, Strait wed Norma, his high school sweetheart. They had two kids together. Following the death of their daughter in an automobile accident in 1986, George founded the Jenifer Lynn Strait Foundation, a children’s charity. George Strait Jr. and his wife Tamara welcomed a son into the world in February 2012, making George a grandfather.

George Strait offered his estate on a hilltop in Texas for $10 million in 2018, then dropped the price to $8.9 million the following year. In January 2021, he reduced the asking price once more to $7.5 million, then in October of that same year, to $6.9 million. December 2021 was mentioned as the sale date. He also owns several other properties in the Lone Star state, including a family-owned ranch near Pearsall, Texas, that dates back more than a century.
