Evanston, Illinois is where Spoelstra was born. His parents are Jon Spoelstra and Elisa Celino. Erik Spoelstra Career Details
Spoelstra got a job as a player and assistant coach right after graduating from college. He worked for Tus Herten, a German professional basketball team in the second division of the Basketball Bundesliga. During this time, Erik learned a lot about coaching and helped a local youth team in Westphalia, Germany, which gave him a lot of experience. However, Erik ended up suffering from serious back injuries, which led to the decline of his playing career. In the end, he accepted the idea of undergoing surgery on his back. Although the club was willing to offer him a two-year contract in 1995, he ultimately decided to return to the United States and begin coaching with the Miami Heat instead.
