A 29-year-old California soccer player died Monday from injuries sustained in a massive brawl at a soccer game two weeks earlier.
Misael Sanchez, of Port Hueneme, had been hospitalized since July 10 after being beaten in a “large fight” between opposing team members and spectators on a soccer field at Oxnard High School, according to an Oxnard Police Department release. The brawl erupted around 11 a.m., allegedly over a disagreement over a referee’s call.
Case Is Being Investigated By The Police
Misael is said to have been assaulted by several people on the field. So far, Oxnard police have apprehended Berlin Jose Melgara, 46, as he attempted to flee the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Misael.
It is unclear whether Melgara played a role in the assault, but police have stated that he has been taken in for questioning about the incident. The police department is still investigating the case and is looking for more witnesses as well as video of the incident in order to find all of the perpetrators.
A Gofundme Campaign Started By Victim’s Family
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to pay for the deceased’s funeral expenses. Here, donations can be made. The family has posted messages on the fundraising website, “It is with a heavy heart to share the passing of our beloved son, Misael Sanchez.”
“My family is devastated and still in shock because we had high hopes for him. On July 10, 2022, Misael was attacked by several attackers and is currently in critical condition. We weren’t prepared for this kind of farewell.
“At this time, we are requesting your prayers. It would also be greatly appreciated if you could make a financial contribution. The gifts will support the family during these trying times. Thank you for your support, love, and prayers, the statement continues.
