Who Was Barry Lane?
Barry Lane is fourth on the list of all-time appearances on the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour, having made 693 starts. After picking up the sport at the tender age of 14, he quickly worked his way up to the post of assistant professional at Downshire Golf Club, located not far from Bracknell.
The Englishman first competed on the Tour in 1982, and in 1987, he won the Equity & Law Challenge held at the Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club. The next year, he won the Scottish Open by three strokes at Gleneagles, defeating José Rivero and Sandy Lyle in the process. It was his first win in a professional competition.

Inspired by his performance at the 1992 Mercedes German Masters, Lane went on to win five consecutive tournaments and place no worse than eleventh on the European Tour Order of Merit between 1992 and 1995. He won the 1993 Canon European Masters before participating in the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry as one of four rookies on Bernard Gallacher’s side.
The next year, at the Turespaa Open de Baleares, he won for the fourth time on the Tour. Then, in 2004, he won the British Masters at Forest of Arden on the European Tour, besting Angel Cabrera and Eduardo Romero by three strokes.
