The final chapter does not go as expected. Mikasa decapitated Eren, while Levi assisted her and the other warriors in fighting the shining centipede. With this, we know that Eren is gone. Mikasa and Armin are grieving over the loss of Eren.
But before that, Eren explains to Armin his motives for the plans of The Rumbling- and confesses his real goal is to help release Ymir from the agony of love. Eren insists that he is not the true titan, and it is in fact, Mikasa. Chapter 138 of Attack on Titan confirms this–Ymir smiles as she sees Mikasa killing Eren.
The conversation was erased from Armin’s memories, but he recovered it after Eren died. After Mikasa kills Eren, all Titans transformed into humans, except for the Islanders who remained in their Titan forms and were scared of outsiders. After the arrival of a mysterious group from outside the wall and Historia’s candidacy for royalty, Armin plans to reveal Eren’s story.
What Happened to Eren and Mikasa?
In the last few pages of Attack on Titan, Mikasa sits by Eren’s grave and tells him she wants to see him soon. The manga skips straight ahead three years, and we know that Mikasa is telling a stone what happened during this time.
Suddenly, her scarf slips off of her neck. A bird quickly flys in and wraps it around—she says “Thank you for wrapping this scarf around me, Eren.” The bird then flies past Armin and their friends.
