Ashley Reeves was born on January 1, 1989, in Belleville, Illinois, in the United States of America. As of 2024, she is 35 years old. Michelle Reeves and her father, Mike Reeves, adopted her when she was a newborn. She grew up in Millstadt, a town in St. Clair County, Illinois.
At Millstadt Consolidated School, where she attended elementary and middle school, she met Samson Shelton, a driver’s education and gym teacher. Later on, Samson Shelton would attack her. The Attack and Rescue
On April 27, 2006, at around 3:30 p.m., Ashley left her home to go to a job interview in a nearby city. She told her parents she would play basketball once she got back by 10 p.m. But she never returned home that evening. Instead, she went to Belleville’s Laderman Park and met Samson Shelton in his car. There, she tried to break things up with him, but he got upset and attacked her.
He first strangled her with his own hands, then with his belt, till he heard a snap. Persuaded he had killed her, he took her body to the woods. He left her for dead and went to a country music club to dance.
Ashley wasn’t dead, though. She had terrible wounds, yet she was still alive. She sustained a severe brain injury, intestinal bleeding, hundreds of mosquito bites, and a shattered neck. She could not move, talk, or phone for assistance. She remained there on the cold earth for about thirty hours before the police found her on April 28.
The police named Shelton their main suspect after finding Ashley’s car near his residence and obtaining her mother’s phone records. They questioned him for twelve hours before he confessed to the crime and provided them with Ashley’s location. When they discovered her lying on the ground, hands up to her chest, tongue sticking out, they thought she was dead. But when they felt a movement in her chest, they quickly took her to the hospital.

The true story of Ashley Reeves, a 17-year-old who was attacked by her former teacher and left for dead in the woods, is told in the documentary Ashley Reeves. The film documents her amazing survival, her convalescence from potentially fatal injuries, and the evidence she gathered against her attacker.
The film took its cues from the television episode “Deadly Lessons” of “On the Case with Paula Zahn.” On June 12, 2021, the film made its Lifetime debut.
