Letitia Ann James is an American politician and lawyer who was born on October 18, 1958. She is the current Attorney General of New York (NYAG) and a member of the Democratic Party.
After winning the 2018 election, she succeeded Barbara Underwood. James is unique in that she is the first woman and African American to occupy this role.

Letitia James’s Early Life
Letitia Ann James is one of seven siblings in a large family. Robert and Nellie James welcomed her into the world. Letitia began her schooling in the public schools of New York City and was raised in the energetic Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope. She pursued her higher studies after graduating from Fort Hamilton High School.
Letitia James graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Lehman College, City University of New York. She majored in liberal arts with a social work concentration. She later went on to earn her J.D. from Washington, D.C.’s Howard University School of Law. Her legal career began with a background in law.

Letitia James Career
She began her professional life as a public defender before going on to work as an assistant attorney general in Brooklyn and the New York State Assembly.
James represented the 35th district, which included sections of Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, on the New York City Council from 2004 until 2013. She participated in various committees and chaired the ones on economic growth and sanitation.
She was the first African-American woman to hold a citywide post in New York City when she served as the Public Advocate for the City from 2013 to 2018. James chose to run for re-election as Attorney General in December 2021, after briefly participating in the 2022 New York gubernatorial campaign.
