Earl Cureton Career

Earl Cureton, a power forward and center, had an incredible basketball career. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and did well at Finney High School before spending a season with Robert Morris.

Later, he went back to his hometown to play football for Dick Vitale’s University of Detroit. Cureton was a first-round pick of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1979 NBA Draft. He played three seasons for the team, helping them win the title in 1983.

After that, he spent three seasons with the Detroit Pistons, where he helped snap a six-year playoff drought. Cureton played for several clubs over his 17-year NBA career, capturing another title in 1994 with the Houston Rockets.

He also performed professionally in South America and Europe. Retiring in 1997, Cureton left a lasting impression on the city he loved by joining the Detroit Pistons as a community ambassador.
