George Lam’s Early Life
Lam was born into a medical family in Hong Kong; his paternal grandpa, a former chief executive of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, and his father, an obstetrician in Yuen Long, were also doctors. He boarded at Diocesan Boys’ School, a mostly English-speaking boys’ school, after attending Tak Sun Primary School. He decided to study French instead of Chinese as a second language at the latter institution.
Lam became interested in music at a young age. Cinema music became familiar to him since his grandfather would frequently take him to see Chinese and Western films. His dad enjoyed playing the piano and listening to music, and his mom enjoyed singing and dancing. He became interested in this art form because of the music that was always around him.
When he was a teenager, he took up playing the guitar on his own and developed a liking for listening to music on the radio. Lam departed Hong Kong in 1965 to pursue his education in the United Kingdom. His exposure to a wide range of musical styles in those nations during this period and his subsequent stay in the United States further expanded his musical horizons.
