Sinéad O’Connor Biography
Sinéad O’Connor was born Sinéad Marie Bernadette O’Connor on December 8, 1966, in Glenageary, County Dublin, Ireland. Her parents, Marie and Sean, a structural engineer who later became a barrister, divorced when Sinéad was a small girl. She had four siblings: John, Eimear, Joseph, and Eoin.
She first moved in with her abusive mother after the divorce, but in 1979 she made the decision to move in with her father and stepmother; her mother passed away in a vehicle accident a few years later. Due to her truancy and stealing, O’Connor was transferred to Magdalene Asylum, a Catholic Grianán Training Centre, at the age of 15.
According to Sinéad, some of the events at Magdalene caused her “fear and terror and anguish.” Afterward, O’Connor left high school, found employment in Dublin as a singing telegram service, and started playing music in bars and on the streets.
