Who was Chalino Sanchez?
Rosalino “Chalino” Sánchez Félix was a famous Mexican singer born on August 30, 1960. Many remember him as “El Rey del Corrido,” which means the “King of the Ballad.” He changed the way many people saw Mexican music in the late 20th century. Chalino wrote songs for people who wanted to remember their personal stories in the form of music. He also made songs that were loved by many on the radio.
He was the youngest in the Sánchez family, born in Sinaloa to Santos Sánchez and Sannorina Félix. From when he was little, Chalino wanted to be known for his music. Sadly, in 1984, Chalino’s brother Armando was killed in Tijuana. This event made Chalino write his first song titled “Recordando A Armando Sánchez.” As Chalino’s songs became more famous, some of his fans gave him gifts, including guns.
Before his brother’s death, a man named Ángel Parra heard Chalino sing and wanted to help him make more music. With Ángel’s help, Chalino started recording songs, and by 1989, many people in California knew about him and wanted him to sing at their events.
He sang at many places in California and created a music group named Los Amables del Norte. With them, Chalino made some of his best music. He worked with big music companies and became known as one of Mexico’s best singers. Many called him “Rey de Los Corridos,” the “King of Ballads”.
In 1992, while singing at a place called Plaza Los Arcos, a man named Eduardo Gallegos shot Chalino. Chalino tried to shoot back but accidentally hurt someone else. This event was on the news and made many people talk about Chalino. His music became even more popular after that.
Tragically, just a few months later, after singing at Salon Bugambilias in Culiacán, people killed Chalino. We still don’t know.

People like Lucio Villareal, El Pelavacas, and Jorge “El Coquio” Castro were some of his customers. A group called “Los Cuatro de la Frontera” suggested he record his songs in a Los Angeles studio named San Angel Records. At first, someone else was supposed to sing Chalino’s songs, but when that person didn’t show up, Chalino sang them himself.
By 1989, Chalino made a cassette with 15 songs and sold them from his car. He also left tapes at local shops in South Central Los Angeles. He later teamed up with Pedro Rivera, another Mexican immigrant, who had a budget-friendly recording studio in Long Beach called Cintas Acuario.
Together, they started making “prohibited corridos,” songs about criminals and brave figures. These songs weren’t played on the radio at first, but they became very popular in Los Angeles. Many event organizers wanted Chalino to perform at their venues. Chalino’s unique style and use of Sinaoloan slang in his songs made him stand out.
