The Diplomat is a smooth but addicting political thriller on Netflix. It gives Keri Russell another well-deserved lead part and has one of the best cliffhanger endings in recent memory. It’s hard to make government fights feel like anything but satire, overwrought, or just plain dull, but The Diplomat does it with ease. The series is juicy enough to keep people interested, serious enough to move towards prestige status, and easy enough to understand that it won’t turn off people who don’t know the difference between the FBI and the CIA. So, it seems likely that there will be a second season, especially since director Debora Cahn is still working with Netflix. So far, here’s what we know.
Will The Diplomat Get A season 2?
Netflix hasn’t said that The Diplomat will return for a second season. But don’t worry because Cahn has signed a long-term deal with Netflix. It looks pretty likely that the show will go on. Jinny Howe, Vice President and Head of Drama Development at Netflix, told Deadline, “I’ve seen Deb’s amazing work on shows like The West Wing.” “She knows how to tell a great story with deep characters, stakes, and shocks, and she’ll bring all that to The Diplomat. We’re happy to have Deb join Netflix.
She told ELLE.com in an interview that she wants to do more. She says,
“I have been fortunate in my life to work on a lot of long-running series, so I think that’s how I think,” she says. “I look for stories that can go on for a long time because, for me, the excitement of being able to go in really deep with characters you already know and you have a relationship with is fantastic. I still don’t know if this is going to be that series or if it’s this eight-hour story. You plan for the best version and hope for the best version and we’ll see what happens.”

When Would The Diplomat Season 2 Be Released?
The news that Netflix gave the go-ahead to The Diplomat came out in January 2022, and the first episode of season 1 came out 15 months later. If the show is renewed soon, a second season could start as early as the end of 2024. But since we don’t have any more information from the mega-streamer yet, we can only guess for now.
What Will Season 2 Be About?
Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), Stuart Heyford (Ato Essandoh), and Ronnie (Jess Chanliau) were left in a cliffhanger at the end of the first season. After U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) figure out that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was really behind the attack on the HMS Courageous and that he hired the Russian Lenkov Group to kill his own people, a bomb goes off in the car of Tory MP Merritt Grove. Hal, Stuart, Ronnie, and Merritt are all in the blast’s path, and when Kate and Austin hear the news, the camera goes black before we can find out what happens next.
So, it’s clear where season 2 will go: the story will focus on these characters’ recoveries (or, if the writers go more darkly, their deaths) while developing Kate and Austin’s case against Trowbridge. (They can’t really accuse the Prime Minister of a crime without the right proof.) In the meantime, the White House will likely speed up its plans to put Kate in the Vice President position, which will soon be open.
The Diplomat Season 2: Cast Details
The ensemble’s effortless charisma contributes to the series’ success; a second season would require the return of all these actors to achieve the same effect. Russell, Sewell, Ali Ahn, Essandoh, Gyasi, Kinnear, Miguel Sandoval, and others will most likely remain in the film’s ensemble cast.
