If the season 2 end of Euphoria, which aired in February, left you with a Euphoria-sized hole in your heart, we have good news for you. The Idol, HBO’s new show, might be just what the doctor ordered. Sam Levinson, Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd), and Reza Fahim made The Idol for television. It’s about a self-help teacher and leader of a modern-day cult who gets involved with a rising pop star. Levinson, The Weeknd, Fahim, Joseph Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Aaron L. Gilbert, and Kevin Turen are all the show’s executive producers.
On June 29, 2021, The Weeknd said he would be creating, executive producing, and co-writing a drama series for HBO called “The Idol.” The show’s main scenes were shot in and around Los Angeles, California, in November 2021. But work on the play stopped for a while in April 2022 because The Weeknd was one of the headliners at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
At first, it was thought that Amy Sediments, who co-created, co-wrote, co-directed, and executive-produced the 2016-ongoing Starz show The Girlfriend Experience, would also direct all the episodes. But on April 25, 2022, it was revealed that Amy Seimetz had left the project, even though many show episodes had already been filmed. HBO put out a statement in which they said:
“The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show, and they have aligned on a new creative direction.” They further stated that “the production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series.”
Sam Levinson is said to have become the show’s new director. The new version of the show went into production at the end of May and was done for good in July 2022. Want to learn more about this music-based drama? Here’s what we know about The Idol, from who’s in it to how to watch it.
Does The Idol Have A Release Date?
The first episode of the HBO show will air on June 4, 2023, at 9:00 PM ET on both HBO and Max, which used to be called HBO Max. HBO’s best shows, like The House of the Dragon, Succession, Euphoria, and The Last of Us, are on Sunday nights. Knowing that it will be with such well-known shows should show how much interest the network has in the front.
What Is The Idol About?
The original plot summary for The Idol hasn’t come out yet. But from what we’ve heard, the show is about a pop singer named Jocelyn who has a nervous breakdown during her last tour. She keeps going because she wants to be known as the sexiest pop star in the United States. When she starts dating Tedros, a mysterious L.A. club owner who is also a cult leader, her love for life comes back.
Who’s In The Cast Of The Idol?
In The Idol, Lily-Rose Depp plays Jocelyn. Depp is best known for playing Isadora Duncan in the 2016 period drama The Dancer, which won her a nomination for the César Award for Most Promising Actress. She is also known for her parts in movies like The King (coming out in 2019) and Voyagers (coming off in 2021).
Abel Tesfaye, better known as “The Weeknd,” is a singer and producer who has won a Grammy Award. He will play Tedros in “The Idol.” This is not the first time the artist has worked in Hollywood. In the 2019 horror film Uncut Gems, he played himself. Troye Sivan is another singer who will be on The Idol. Sivan has been in movies and on TV before, just like The Weeknd. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which came out in 2009, Sivan played a young Wolverine. In the Spud movie trio (2010–2014), he played John “Spud” Milton.
Dan Levy, who won a Primetime Emmy Award as David Rose on the CBC comedy show Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020), will also be in The Idol. The second teaser for The Idol showed that Levy had been hired. This happened just a few days after it was reported that the actor would be in the new season of Sex Education (2019-present), a hit drama comedy on Netflix.
Suzanna Son will also be in The Idol. She is best known for her role as Strawberry in Red Rocket, a dark comedy in 2021. On April 27, 2022, it was said that Son, who was supposed to play one of the cult members, wouldn’t be back for the big reshoot because the creative direction was changing. But when the second official peek for The Idol came out, Son’s place on the show was confirmed.
Jennie is a member of the girl group Blackpink. In The Idol, she will play for the first time as Jennie Ruby Jane. Moses Sumney, Jane Adams (Frasier), Eli Roth (Inglourious Basterds), Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby), Hari Nef (Transparent), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite is my Name!), Hank Azaria (The Simpsons), and record producer Mike Dean will also be in The Idol.

How To Watch The Idol?
The Idol will be on HBO and HBO Max in the US. To watch, you’ll need either an HBO subscription through your television company or an HBO Max subscription.
How Many Episodes Will The Idol Have?
There will be six shows of The Idol. Each episode will last about an hour, so the show still has enough time to tell a powerful story. But it’s still two or three episodes shorter than most other HBO shows, so keep that in mind.
Is There A Trailer For The Idol?
On July 17, 2022, The Idol’s first teaser trailer was released. The video doesn’t say much about the story or the characters. But it does show how things will go. There are parties, dancing, drugs, romance, fast cars, sex, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and more. The teaser also showed us a bit of Jocelyn’s friendship with Tedros. In one scene, Tedros asks her, “Do you trust me?” She says, “Not really.”
The second preview, which came out on August 21, 2022, doesn’t tell us much. It tells us that the show is coming “from the gutters of Hollywood” and clears up what cast members were still in the front after the reshoots.
