Irene Cara, whose songs from “Flashdance” and “Fame” were huge hits in the 1980s, has died. Friday, Cara died in her Florida home, according to her representative. No information was given about how she died.
Irene won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “What a Feeling,” the famous song from “Flashdance” that made her a household name.
Irene’s song “Fame” from the movie of the same name was also a huge hit. For her work in the movie, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Best Actress.”
Cara went on to be in other movies, like “City Heat,” which also starred Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. She was also in “Certain Fury” with Tatum O’Neal.
Irene was given a “Prestige Award for Lifetime Achievement” in 2004.
Her rep said, “I’m sorry to say that Irene Cara has died. I’m doing this on behalf of her family. Irene’s family has asked to be left alone while they deal with their grief. She was a beautiful, talented person whose music and movies will keep her memory alive for all time.”
