The music and performance business took a big hit in 2020 when most tours were canceled and big music festivals couldn’t happen. But the news that Daft Punk, a Parisian techno music duo that has been together for a long time, is splitting up is a big blow to the industry as a whole.
The pair started making house and electronic music together in the early 1990s. After almost 30 years of making music together, they told fans they were breaking up, which was sad for them. Why did they break up, though?

The music group said they were breaking up in a video called “Epilogue,” which was posted on their YouTube channel on February 22.
The eight-minute video is an excerpt from their film Electroma. It starts with both members walking silently together in the desert. One of the members stops walking, and when his partner turns around to talk to him, he takes off his “Daft Punk” bomber jacket. This lets his friend turn on what looks like a self-destruct switch.
As the timer counts down from 60, he moves away from his friend and walks back in the direction he came. When it gets to zero, he explodes, which means the end of the relationship.
French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter started the band in 1993. Together, they ruled the house and techno music scene for many years. Their first hit songs were “Da Funk” and “Around the World,” which were on their 1997 album “Homework.”
After the release of “Discovery” in 2001, which had the long-time hits “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and “One More Time,” they slowly became well-known. Around this time, the two also started wearing their robot helmets and acting like fake robots, which is what made them famous.
Daft Punk’s popularity grew in the 2010s with songs like “Get Lucky” with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers and “Starboy” by the Weeknd. They also worked on Kanye West’s album “Yeezus” with him.
Why Did Daft Punk Break Up?
When contacted by the music website Stereogum, Daft Punk’s publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed that the group was no longer together, but she didn’t say why.
The two haven’t said anything about why they’re breaking up yet, even though they’ve been in the business for 28 years. The group’s last studio album, “Random Access Memories,” came out in 2013. Since then, we haven’t heard anything about new music from the band.

Fans joked on Twitter that the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going on for two years, was to blame for the cancellation of Coachella for the second year in a row.

Daft Punk gave the first performance of their groundbreaking pyramid light show at Coachella in 2006. They kept doing it on their “Alive” tour through 2006 and 2007.
