42 Dugg, a rapper from Detroit, may have to serve up to five more years in jail because he didn’t show up for his previously agreed-upon prison sentence. The 28-year-old rapper was sentenced to six months in a West Virginia prison camp for illegally having a gun, and according to a story in The Detroit News, he pleaded guilty this week to avoid that sentence. Now, the judge has the chance to make his prison term longer than the six months that were already set.
Dion Hayes, also known as 42 Dugg, is in the hands of U.S. District Judge William Ray II in an Atlanta, Georgia, federal court. A plea agreement filed last month says that Hayes should spend six months in jail, then go to a 30-day inpatient drug treatment program, followed by a 30-day outpatient program. But he could go to jail for up to five years and have to pay a fine of $250,000. Hayes is due back in court on May 10 to get his sentence.
Hayes’s fame in the music business has gone through the roof in the past few years, and he has been in and out of court since 2010. He was in jail from 2010 to 2017 for stealing a car and having illegal guns. During his freedom after that, Hayes got help from singers Yo Gotti and Lil Baby to start a successful rap career. Most people know him from his appearances on Lil Baby’s songs “We Paid” and “Grace.” In 2021, he also put out a mixtape called “Free Dem Boyz.” Then, the following year, he made Last Ones Left.
Hayes has been in trouble with the law since November 2019, when he was caught going to a gun range even though he had been convicted. Someone who didn’t want to be identified called the ATF, and the agency got security footage from the firing range that showed Hayes using a pistol for target practice. He was caught in March 2020 and given a bond to escape jail.
Hayes was given probation and fines at first for what happened, but things got confusing when he failed court-ordered drug tests repeatedly. His sentence was finally changed to six months in federal prison, but in April 2022, he did not show up for that time. This led to an extensive search that made a lot of noise on social media, where Hayes kept posting.
The rapper was finally caught last spring, and he has allegedly been in an Atlanta prison for almost a year now. He is being held in a low-security federal prison in Georgia, and it is unclear if that is where he will spend the rest of his time.
