What Offense Did Yolanda Saldívar Commit?
Yolanda Saldivar committed the offense of first-degree murder of Selena Quintanilla in 1995 and is currently serving a life sentence in prison. Quintanilla found out in March 1995 that Saldívar had been embezzling money from the two Selena businesses she was running.
As testified during Saldívar’s murder trial, Selena’s father told Saldívar during a meeting on March 9 that he intended to report the misappropriation to the police. The family found more proof of Saldívar’s financial misdeeds in the coming weeks, which also happened to coincide with her alleged purchase of at least one rifle.
Selena went to a Corpus Christi, Texas, motel room on March 31 to get financial records from Saldívar. Saldívar allegedly got into a fight with Selena before shooting her in the back.
The singer made it to the hotel foyer and spoke to the staff, “Yolanda… [Room] 158,” before passing away. Less than two hours later, a local hospital confirmed Selena dead, and after a 10-hour confrontation with police during which Saldívar threatened to commit suicide and held a revolver to her head, she was eventually taken into custody.
