Google is celebrating the Flat White today, as indicated on their Doodles page. On Monday, March 11, Google Doodle delighted internet users by featuring an animated celebration of the flat white coffee.

This espresso-based beverage, claimed by both Australia and New Zealand as its origin, gained official recognition when it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011.

Why is Today Google Celebrating Flat White?

“Today’s animated Doodle celebrates the flat white, a beloved coffee drink of steamed milk poured over a shot of espresso. Many speculate the drink was first served in Australia and New Zealand during the 1980s when the drink popped up on menus in Sydney and Auckland around the same time,” wrote Google on its website.

A flat white is usually served in a ceramic cup and is composed of an espresso shot topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam. As opposed to frothed milk, the milk is heated to create a velvety, smooth crema for the top. The flat white is a creamy espresso-based drink that is similar to a latte, except it has a lower milk-to-espresso ratio and a double shot of espresso.

“Coffee culture has changed a lot over the years and so have ways to make the flat white. Made with whole milk back in the day, today it’s common to see Aussies and Kiwis ordering it with plant-based milk — oat milk is a rising favourite!” the statement continued.

Flat whites, known for their smooth texture and reduced foam, are preferred by those who enjoy a more subtle coffee experience compared to the frothier cappuccinos or lattes.

In Australia and New Zealand, this preference showcases the skill of baristas through detailed milk art, highlighting the dynamic coffee culture. Traditionally prepared with whole milk, the trend has shifted towards plant-based options like oat milk, aligning with contemporary dietary preferences.
