Mitch McConnell Career
McConnell became a private in the US Army Reserve in 1967. However, because of his visual neuritis, he was considered medically unsuitable to serve in the military. In Washington, D.C., McConnell served as Senator Marlow Cook’s top legislative assistant from 1968 to 1970. In this role, he oversaw a five-member legislative department and helped with constituent services and speech preparation.
McConnell attempted to run for a State Legislature representative seat in 1971. He was, however, disqualified for failing to meet the residency criteria for that kind of position. He decided to work as a professor at the University of Louisville and for the legal firm Segal, Isenberg, Sales, and Stewart shortly after the loss.
McConnell decided to go back to Washington in October 1974 to take up a post under President Gerald Ford as Deputy Assistant Attorney General. After that, McConnell presided over Jefferson County as Executive Judge from 1977 until 1984. He then entered the race for a US Senate seat, defeating two-term incumbent Walter Dee Huddleston with 3,437 votes out of a total of 1.2 million ballots.
He won the election to represent Kentucky as a senator from the United States on January 3, 1985. Known as a pragmatic and moderate Republican in his early years, he has gradually moved to the right and grown more conservative.
