Owens attended Benjamin Russell High School and participated in basketball, track, baseball, and, in his junior year, football. He attended the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, where he played basketball, and football, and ran track. He became a starter in his sophomore year. In order to be drafted by the NFL, he competed in the Senior Bowl during his senior year of high school.

Owens has two daughters and two sons from four different mothers.
