Sex Education Renewed for Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

Fans of the popular Netflix series Sex Education can rejoice since the fourth season has been announced by the service.

One of our top picks for the finest Netflix shows is the ground-breaking high school drama, so it was no surprise to see that Sex Education has been renewed for a fourth season after season 3 immediately rose to the top of the service’s most-watched lists.

Since the season 3 cliffhanger finale left many important topics unsolved, we, for one, are thrilled to be returning to the series hormone-filled corridors for season 4.

In this post, we’ve compiled all the most recent snippets, rumors, and news items that could provide insight into the potential future of the wildly successful Netflix series. We have also looked into our own hypotheses regarding what the plot of Sex Education will include.

The sex lives of Moor dale High students and their parents are the focus of Sex Education, a very popular coming-of-age comedic drama on Netflix. The first three seasons were a must-watch because they included a combination of amusing teenage dating mishaps and touching partnerships.

Discover everything we currently know about Sex Education season 4, which is set to begin filming in July. This includes new cast members, potential plot lines, and whether this might be the final time we see Otis and his buddies.

Sex Education Season 4 Is It Renewed?

Sex Education Season 4 has been renewed for late 2022.

Sex Education Season 4 Expected Release Date

Sex Education season 4’s release date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, but you can be sure that Netflix has formally renewed the program.

Of course, it won’t likely arrive for a while. Early in 2023 is the best guess.

In a 2021 casting notice for season 4, the show’s creators expressed their wish to work with two trans actors to play a pair of new characters, which supported their estimate. The call stated, “The project films April-November 2022,” and a recent production listing(opens in new tab) verified that filming began in July, so Sex Education season 4 won’t be released this year.

It’s unlikely that Series 4 will be released this year because filming barely began in July. The first two seasons—seasons 1 and 2—arrived in January 2019 and 2020, respectively, but the third season—which was delayed by Covid—didn’t debut until September 2021.

Season 4 won’t premiere until late next year because Netflix indicated that filming will go on until 2023.

Even though Moordale’s pupils can only attend the make-believe school for a finite amount of time until it becomes absurd for them to roam the classrooms as twenty-somethings headed for college, we’re happy that the show will return.

But given that Sex Education has been renewed by Netflix for a fourth season, it may choose to maintain the same release schedule as previous seasons, which debuted in January 2019 and 2020, respectively, with the exception of the third season, which was impeded by the pandemic.

The Netflix UK Twitter account teased(opens in a new tab) the following statement in April 2022 on Sex Education’s future season: “More sexual activity. more drama Moor…dale. What follows? We’re sorry, but we are unable to divulge that information. However, we CAN advise you to check back here regularly for updates on Season 4.”

In the upcoming months, we’ll keep an eye out for any additional official murmurs.

Sex Education Season 4 Cast Predictions

In terms of who is most likely to return for season 4, we anticipate seeing series regulars Asa Butterfield, Ncuti Gatwa (whose participation has been confirmed), and Gillian Anderson all reprise their individual roles as Otis, Eric, and Jean.

The majority of the show’s new season 3 characters, including headteacher Hope (Jemima Kirke) and new student Cal, as well as actors like Connor Swindells (Adam), Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson), Mimi Keene (Ruby), and Mikael Persbrandt (Jakob), all look set to return (Dua Saleh).

However, Patricia Allison will not be playing Ola again in Sex Education. For the fourth season of the show, the actor confirmed on Capital Xtra in July that she “won’t be joining the team,” citing a desire to pursue “some other minor things.”

The same is true for Simone Ashley, whose current obligations to the Netflix series Bridgerton prevent her from playing Olivia Hanan in the upcoming season of Sex Education. Additionally, Rakhee Thakrar (Miss Sands) and Tanya Reynold (Lily) will not be repeating their roles because they both plan to concentrate on other endeavors.

The destiny of Maeve Wiley, played by Emma Mackey, is still up in the air. We would naturally expect her to return at some point given that she left for America at the end of season 3, but it’s not immediately clear whether that will be in season 4 or possibly a later season. She is still a significant player in the show’s ongoing will-they-won’t-they story between Otis and Maeve.

Additionally, Mackey is now filming for Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited Barbie movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, so there’s a possibility that she’ll take Simone Ashley’s lead and choose fresh, prestigious roles over a comeback in Sex Education.

Interestingly, Ncuti Gatwa, who is also listed on the call sheet for Gerwig’s Barbie movie, has been confirmed as the new Doctor Who, so while there was a remote possibility that he, too, may withdraw from Sex Education’s upcoming episodes, his participation was formally confirmed in August 2022.

According to the aforementioned casting call, Sex Education will welcome a number of new actors for season 4. Hopefully, these actors will have more significant roles than Jason Isaacs, who was sadly underutilized in season 3.

For Sex Education season 4, the following cast members have been announced.

  • Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn
  • Gillian Anderson as Dr. Jean Milburn
  • Ncuti Gatwa as Eric Effiong
  • Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley
  • Connor Swindells as Adam Groff
  • Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson Marchetti
  • Alistair Petrie as Michael Groff
  • Mimi Keene as Ruby Matthews
  • Aimee Lou Wood as Aimee Gibbs
  • George Robinson as Isaac Goodwin
  • Chinenye Ezeudu as Vivienne ‘Viv’ Odusanya
  • Dua Saleh as Cal Bowman
  • Samantha Spiro as Maureen Groff
  • Dan Levy as Thomas Molloy
  • Thaddea Graham
  • Marie Reuther
  • Felix Mufti
  • Anthony Lexa
  • Alexandra James
  • Reda Elazouar
  • Bella Maclean
  • Imani Yahshua

In addition, it has been revealed that the smash comedy on Netflix is looking for two trans actors to play two trans characters in upcoming episodes as the program has announced a transfer to college.

Casting call for two new trans characters in Season 4 of ‘Sex Education,’ according to series creator Krishna Isha on Twitter. Trans actors, act now!

The new characters include Kent, a trans male who is characterized as “goofy, forgetful, and a fantastic listener,” and Abbi, a young trans woman who “has a ’90s Winona Ryder feel” and is “the queen bee of her college.”

Sex Education Season 4 Plot

Following the events of the previous series, it appears that the show will undergo several changes in season four. After investors withdrew funds in response to the students’ protest against headteacher Hope’s new restrictions, Moordale High appears to be closing.

Even though Maeve and Otis began dating in the third season, their romance ended when Maeve decided to move to the United States. We’ll have to wait and see if they try long-distance in season four or if things pick up once Maeve returns to Moordale.

The Netflix official plot summary reads as follows: “Otis and Eric now face a fresh challenge after Moordale Secondary was shut down: their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Eric hopes they won’t lose again as Otis worries about opening his new clinic.

“For all of the Moordale students, though, Cavendish is a cultural shock because while they felt they were progressive, this new college is on another level. Daily yoga in the community garden, a strong emphasis on sustainability, and a group of young people who are well-known for being… kind?”

Added is: “The college’s student-led, non-competitive ethos completely surprises Viv, while Jackson is still having trouble moving past Cal. By enrolling in an art A Level, Aimee attempts something new, while Adam questions whether traditional education is right for him.

“Maeve is pursuing her passion in the US at famous Wallace University, where cult author Thomas Molloy is her professor. Otis is missing her while getting used to the fact that he is no longer an only child at home or the lone therapist at school.”

Aimee Lou Wood, the star of Sex Education, recently hinted that season four will feel “a lot more grown up” than previous seasons. The Aimee Gibbs actor revealed in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com that series creator Laurie Nunn gave her some insight into the future show.

“I actually talked to Laurie a little bit about some of the stories because I was so curious about what would happen to Aimee and the other characters next.

“She revealed a few things to me, and I believe it will be wonderful. It’s going to be incredibly strange because, obviously, I have no idea how things will turn out now that Moordale is no longer there. It will feel extremely different from how it has, in my opinion, but in a good manner since I believe they are maturing.

“The third season had a much more mature feel, in my opinion. I believe it will progress even farther in season four “Added her.

The season 3 finale also hinted that Jakob might not be the biological father of Jean’s child, which would undoubtedly challenge their shaky bond and their newly formed family structure.

Cal and fellow non-binary student Layla’s growing friendship and perhaps a potential love triangle between Eric, Adam, and Rahim, Eric’s former boyfriend, are further third-season narrative lines that are likely to be addressed in season four.

In what way did Sex Educations season 3 end?

The fall of Hope Haddon’s government and the loss of the school’s financial sponsors caused Moordale School to close.

Following this, Hope stated she felt like a failure and decided to undergo another round of IVF therapy after three years of failure. Otis, however, soothed her by explaining the value of being honest about the body and sexual difficulties.

In another instance, Eric told Adam that while in Lagos, he had kissed another man, but he did not regret it and said he still feels Adam is holding him back, ending their relationship.

Despite being devastated, Adam continued to pursue his love of dog shows with his dog Madame and with the support of his mother Maureen, and teacher Emily Sands who were watching a show.

Lily regained her foreign passions and Ola handled her mother-related pain, which helped the troubled marriage Lily and Ola reunite.

Jakob and Jean’s child was also born, but it was a difficult delivery for Jean, who nearly lost her life. The new family consisted of her, Jakob, Otis, and Ola once she recovered from her illness.

Jakob and Jean’s future, however, are now in doubt after a shocking development suggested that he might not actually be the baby’s father.

In a different tale, the former headmaster Michael Groff matured and stood up to his bully brother Peter before engaging in passionate sex with his estranged wife Maureen.

Maureen put off a full reconciliation despite Michael’s wishes because she didn’t want to cause Adam any confusion.

The handsome boyfriend of ambitious Viv, Eugene, was introduced to us in the conclusion.

While Cal, a non-binary student, and Jackson attempted to grasp what it meant to him, their identities at the time simply didn’t mesh well enough for them to be friends.

In an emotional plotline, Aimee, who had been sexually abused in the second season, sought therapy for her trauma and made up with her best friend Maeve after covertly paying for her school trip and starting a fight.

Aimee later ended her relationship with her sweetheart Steve because she wants to discover who she is on her own.

The “untouchable” Ruby also managed to make amends with Otis after their relationship ended because of her unrequited love for him.

Otis eventually confessed his unending love for Maeve before Isaac ended their relationship, leading to their kiss.

Even though she was about to start seeing someone, Maeve traveled to the US for a while to attend school. Her fugitive mother Erin covered her expenses.

Will Otis and Maeve be able to reconcile?
