“Sand Land” is a forthcoming RPG developed from the creative genius of Akira Toriyama, the legendary figure behind “Dragon Ball” and the renowned character designer for the “Dragon Quest” series.
Originating from a manga spanning 14 chapters that were first published in 2000, this title is not the sole adaptation in the works: a CGI film adaptation of “Sand Land” was released last year, and there’s a streaming series based on “Sand Land” anticipated to debut in late 2024.
Both the “Sand Land” manga and its cinematic counterpart are quintessential Toriyama, showcasing unique character designs, zany humor, and grandiose confrontations.
Sand Land Game Release Date
The release date for the Sand Land game is April 26, 2024. It will be available on platforms including PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
Players on PlayStation platforms can buy “Sand Land” whether they own a PS4 or have moved on to a PS5, but there hasn’t been any announcement regarding its availability on Xbox One. Likewise, there’s uncertainty about its release on the Nintendo Switch. However, considering “Dragon Quest 11” made its way to the Switch eventually, there remains a possibility for “Sand Land” to follow suit.

Sand Land Story Details
The launch trailer for “Sand Land,” posted on YouTube on January 11, 2024, unveils critical elements of the game’s narrative. Although it remains faithful to the source manga, it seems to draw additional inspiration from the recent film adaptation, incorporating a few innovative elements as well.
Set in an expansive, desert wilderness, “Sand Land” unfolds several decades following a devastating war and a sequence of environmental catastrophes that eradicated most of the planet’s water resources. The game introduces us to Beelzebub, a small demon who is the offspring of Lucifer and the Prince of Hell. He routinely pilfers from humans, albeit with the conscientious limitation of only seizing as much water as needed for himself and his minions.
Beelzebub’s journey intersects with that of Rao, a general who once commanded an action leading to one of the conflict’s most horrific events: the Aquanium Explosion, resulting in a massive crater. Vowing retribution against his former sovereign, the oppressive King who monopolizes Sand Land’s water supply, charging exorbitant rates for it and leaving the impoverished to suffer from thirst, Rao sets out in search of the Legendary Spring.
This mythic water source, purported to be inexhaustible, might be the key to liberation or merely a legend. Beelzebub joins Rao in this quest, driven by the atrocities witnessed under the er King’s dominion.

A novel addition to the game is Ann, a skilled mechanic who assists Beelzebub and Rao in building tanks to combat King’s forces. Together with Thief, they form an unlikely alliance, venturing through the desert to battle soldiers, mechanical beasts, and gargantuan monsters in their quest to emancipate the people of Sand Land from King’s oppressive rule.
Despite some alterations, the early previews suggest that the “Sand Land” video game faithfully embodies the essence of its manga origin and movie counterpart, offering a mix of humor, excitement, a touch of despair, several plot twists, and an uplifting moral message.
