Roblox is a game platform that allows users to create their own games and play games created by other users. Recently, Roblox was under the threat of a few hackers who had managed to breach the wall of the online platform and obtain information.
Hacker bribes for information
Two days ago, Roblox faced the threat of a hacker who demanded the information of the users. The security breach was not done in the traditional way that hackers usually go about. The information was received after the hacker bribed an official who worked at Roblox.
It was reportedly a case of phishing and the employee was unaware of the hacker trying to steal information. He obtained a lot of personal information about the users on the platform which comprise mostly of children.
When authorities were informed about it, the hacker told them that he did it to collect a bounty on a security bug. After a thorough investigation by HackerOne, the security team of Roblox, it was found that there was no such bug, and he made the whole thing up.
The situation went downhill from here. The hacker demanded the bounty but was refused by the company. He then went on to change the passwords of several users and even stole their Roblox items.
The hacker showed proof of the ‘bug’ by showing the officials that he had access to user’s emails, passwords, and could even turn off their two-factor authentication. He also had the power to ban certain users. He also had inside information about the internal system that could only be accessed by a Roblox official. When asked why he did it, he said that he only did it to prove a point.
Roblox’s response to the hack
While speculations said that there were a lot of accounts that had been hacked, Roblox confirmed that the news was inaccurate.
The company revealed that only a few accounts were hacked and that everything was now under control. They were working on better security systems. The hacker whose identity has not been revealed has been taken care of. Roblox developers assured the users that there is nothing to worry about anymore.
Previous hacks
This isn’t the first time the online platform has been hacked. Back in 2018, a hacker used the online platform to perform heinous actions on an avatar.
The individual managed to subvert the game’s protection system and used it to customize avatar actions and appearances. The hacker then went on to rape the avatar of a 7-year-old child on the platform. Many parents complained about how the platform could’ve been so careless so as to let such an incident happen.
The mother had taken screenshots to prove what had been done and posted it on social media. Roblox issued a formal apology to the victim and her family and had determined how the hacker got into the system.
Roblox is an educational platform for children and they should be more careful about their security system. If this keeps happening, not only will it lose its user base but also be forced to shut down because of the lieu of incidents that have already taken place.
