Rob Thomas Career
Together with John Goff, Paul Doucette, Jay Stanley, and Brian Yale, Thomas founded the band Tabita’s Secret in 1993. The band was well-liked in the Orlando region, where they performed regularly at nightclubs and bars. Thomas wrote most of their songs, including “3 A.M.,” which recounted his experiences tending to his sick mother. It was his very first composition.
After meeting a record producer, the band broke up, and Thomas was devastated because he believed that would be his only opportunity to get a recording contract. Still, Thomas, Doucette, and Yale wanted to collaborate on music, so they brought in guitarists Adam Gaynor and Kyle Cook—whom the record producer had introduced the trio to—to form Matchbox 20.
The hit single “Push” from 1996 signaled the arrival of Matchbox 20. “Yourself or Someone Like You,” the band’s debut album, achieved 12 platinum certification in the US. Carlos Santana and Thomas co-wrote the 1999 hit song “Smooth.” That year, the song won three Grammys, including Song of the Year. Matchbox 20 released “Mad Season,” their second album, in 2000. The chart-topping single “Bent” was the lead release.
The band’s third album, “More Than You Think You Are,” was released towards the end of 2002. “Something to Be,” Thomas’ solo album, was released in 2005. “Lonely No More,” the first single, peaked at number six on the charts. In 2007, the group released “Exile on Mainstream,” a greatest hits compilation featuring six brand-new songs.
2009 saw the release of Thomas’s second solo album, “Cradlesong.” In the fall of 2012, Matchbox 20’s “North” was released—ten years after their previous full-length album of brand-new music. In 2015, Thomas’s third solo album “The Great Unknown” was released; in 2019, his fourth solo album “Chip Tooth Smile” was made available.
In addition, Thomas appeared as himself in a guest spot on the fourth season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Additionally, he often appears as a guest on “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
Along with these musicians, Thomas has written songs for Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Marc Anthony, Pat Green, Taylor Hicks, Travis Tritt, and Daughtry.
