When Carroll first took over as head coach of the New York Jets in 1994, the team did not fare well under his leadership. After that, he worked for the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive coordinator from 1995 to 1996. In 1997, he was hired as the New England Patriots’ head coach, a position he held until 1999.
