Persona 5 Royal: Sega Announces That Atlus’ Newest RPG Has Broken Sales Records

Persona 5 Royal seems to have done better than publishers Sega expected it to in terms of sales. The game is an expanded version of the original Persona 5, which came out in 2016 in Japan. Naturally, it’s likely that it wouldn’t sell as much since it’s not a completely new title.

Persona 5 Royal Had A Lot Of Competition Around It

On top of that, it came out in a crowded release schedule. Massive, heavyweight titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal and Final Fantasy VII Remake all came out in the weeks before and after Persona 5 Royal’s Western release of March 31, 2020.

However, it seems like that hasn’t really hurt Persona 5 Royal’s sales figures. According to Persona Central, there was a financial results briefing session for analysts and investors of Sega Sammy Holdings on May 13, 2020. We also got a transcript of this briefing on May 18, 2020.

Persona 5 Royal Achieved “Record Sales” In The U.S. And Europe

One of the questions was regarding digital sales of their game titles overseas. The original transcript is in Japanese, but Persona Central have translated the relevant section for us. It reads as follows:

“Also, in the “Persona” series, “Persona 5 Royal” began selling in the U.S. and Europe on March 31st, achieving record sales. While physical sales were restricted, the ratio of digital sales increased significantly and are remaining strong in FY21/3 (fiscal year ending in March 2021).”

It’s not a surprise that physical sales didn’t do as well, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Digital sales had been increasing in popularity across the gaming industry anyway. This whole situation has likely given them a huge boost.

Commercial Success Is Good News For Future Persona Titles

There is a second Persona 5 title that’s out in Japan right now, called Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers. Many of the series’ fans, including myself, want that game to come to the West. So, it is doing well in the U.S. and Europe bodes well for all of us.

It’s also wonderful to see a phenomenal game also be a commercial success. I finished Persona 5 Royal just a few days ago, and I can’t wait to play it all over again. Persona 5 Royal is available to play exclusively on PlayStation 4.
