Nick Jonas is talking more about his experience with diabetes.
On Monday, which was World Diabetes Day, the 30-year-old singer of “Only Human” posted a video on Instagram about how he found out he had Type 1 diabetes.
Jonas said in the video, as Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” played in the background, that his diagnosis at age 13 was based on four key signs: weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and irritability.
“These are common signs that someone has Type 1 diabetes. So that others can #SeeTheSigns, I’m sharing my signs. Join me and share yours using the hashtags #SeeTheSigns, #T1D, and #WorldDiabetesDay with @beyondtype1. “He wrote it.
Jonas has Type 1 diabetes, which means that his body makes very little or no insulin and needs to take insulin pills.
Last year, the star told PEOPLE that one of his older brothers was the first to notice that he was losing weight and drinking “unstoppable” amounts of sugary soda.
“When I was diagnosed, it kind of threw a wrench in the works, and it took me a while to figure out how to count carbs to get the right amount of insulin and how different things would affect me,” Jonas said.
Jonas has had diabetes for 17 years and haf5t4 x8 yuds learned a lot about how to deal with it. He says he now has a “fairly good handle” on it. But he said last year that he wished he had someone to look up to when he was diagnosed at such a young age. Now, he wants to be that person for someone else: “That’s my focus.”
“When I was first diagnosed, I was sitting in the hospital and was scared to death, honestly, while I was learning about how to manage this new thing I was dealing with,” Jonas recalled. “It would have been amazing to have someone to look at that time to say, this is a person living with it and they’re following their dreams. They’re doing what they want to do with their lives and not letting it slow them down.”
The musician said that it is his job to help people who are dealing with the disease “stay encouraged.” He gets help from his wife, Priyanka Chopra, and his family, including Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas, who are also in the band Jonas Brothers and are his brothers.
“I think that mental and emotional health aspect of it is really important,” he says. “I certainly speak to my therapist … and luckily, I’ve got a perfect support system around me and a great set of doctors,” he adds.
