The Cleveland Cavaliers have not had a good team without Lebron James since the Mark Price era. This year, there was a ray of hope in Collin Sexton. Darius Garland and Kevin Porter Jr. are also bright prospects. But they also did not have a great record. They will not be returning to Orlando to resume the season.
Cleveland has a decent young core but they still a cornerstone franchise player. The best way for them to get such a player is through the NBA Draft 2020. The following are the three best 2020 NBA draft prospects for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Highest Upside Prospect: James Wiseman
There are many questions surrounding Wiseman and his potential in the league. Many are concerned about his motor and overall skillset. But he is still a high lottery pick. Cleveland does not need much more help at the guard positions, but they have real problems at the center position. Drummond won’t be in Cleveland for long and Love does not feature to be in their long term plans. Wiseman is going to be a great rim runner at the beginning. At his best, he could be an elite shot-blocker with a decent long ball.
Highest Floor Prospect: Obi Toppin
Once Kevin Love leaves or the team trades him, Cleveland will want a good power forward. Toppin is the best power forward in the draft. He is a great 3-pt shooter and can finish buckets with ease around the rim. Toppin is as much of a sure thing as there in this draft. In a draft full of players with upside but no clear superstars, having a guy like Toppin isn’t necessarily the worst thing. With his physical profile, he could easily turn into a great defender. Thus, Cleveland could fill their PF needs with Toppin.
Best Fit Overall: Onyeka Okongwu
Okongwu has the potential to be a player like Bam Adebayo. For a team full of below-par to average defenders, Okongwu could be exactly what Cleveland needs. He can guard all five positions, is a tenacious rebounder, and can be an elite shot-blocker. Moreover, he has a soft touch around the rim. He also has a developing jumper which means he could eventually be a good 3-pt shooter. Thus, Okongwu could be the superstar glue guy that Cleveland desperately needs.
