The 2019-20 NBA season is not even over yet. Most fans are simply craving for this season to return. So making predictions for 2020-21 award winners is a little premature. But for fans of 8 teams, they don’t have much to look forward to till December 2020. Their NBA season is over and since they were terrible this season, they were looking forward to next season before the pandemic also. So here are way-too-predictions for 2020-21 NBA Awards
2020-21 NBA MVP Prediction: Stephen Curry
Many will argue that this award will more likely go to Giannis or Doncic or Jayson Tatum. Here’s why it won’t. Giannis is likely to win his second-straight MVP in 2019-20. Voter fatigue will set in for 2020-21. He will have to average Wilt-like numbers to have a chance and that’s just not happening in today’s era.
Doncic might average a triple-double next season but that’s not as special since Westbrook made a habit of it. Moreover, the player with the better team record usually gets the MVP and the Mavs are still a player away from being the best in the league. Tatum has a legitimate shot but he just has too many scoring options around him. He is unlikely to put up MVP-worthy numbers with Brown, Kemba, and Hayward around him.
The MVP Award usually goes to the player with the best storyline. No player is likely to have a better story than Steph next season. Curry will be returning from a lost 2019/20 season. Most people are counting out the Warriors without Durant. Curry will have more motivation than ever.
Without Durant, Curry will get to score much more. Last time Steph was the sole engine, he was the first unanimous MVP. A healthy Warriors team with a lottery pick and a motivated squad will have one of the best records. Steph’s status as the best player on the team will get him his third MVP.
2020-21 DPOY Prediction: Bam Adebayo
Adebayo has a chance to win it this year but it will likely go to Giannis. Next year, Bam will likely solidify himself as the perfect modern defender. He has a gritty Miami defence around him and he is going to grow his presence by next season. His versatility to defend all five positions and growing development as a disruptor will land him his first DPOY in 2020-21.
2020-21 Most Improved Player Prediction: Andrew Wiggins
Wiggins is now in one of the best cultures in the league. He no longer has to be the second option on offence. The Warriors’ system is built for him to thrive. Wiggins has the talent to make it happen. He will feast on the easy looks that Curry and Klay will generate as a slasher and spot-up shooter. His defence will also improve in the Warriors system. If he can be more efficient, be more focussed on defence, and improve his passing numbers, he could take home the Most Improved Player award next season.
