NBA Basketball: Three Things The Warriors Must Do Before 2020/21 Season

The Warriors end the 2019/20 season with a 15-50 record. This is their worst winning percentage in the 21st century. But they will be title contenders again next season with a healthy Curry and Klay Thompson. They will have good supporting players in Wiggins, Green, Chriss, Looney, and Paschall.

But to be a favourite for the 2020/21 NBA title, the Warriors will need to make some great moves. If they get the 2020/21 NBA offseason right, they could easily win their 4th title in 7 seasons. The following are three things that the Warriors must do before the 2020/21 NBA season starts.

Use The Iguodala Trade Exception Well

The Warriors have a $17.2 Million exception from the Andre Iguodala trade. They need to ensure that they use this exception perfectly. The Warriors are going to be in the luxury cap next season already. Hence, they will not have any other opportunity to add elite veteran talent.

There are many great options that the Warriors could target with this option. Dennis Schroder will be the perfect backup guard for Curry and Thompson. He will also arguably be a 6th man of the year contender. Marcus Smart, on the other hand, would replace the elite defence of Andre Iguodala. He could help fill out the new death lineup. A player like Rodney Hood would provide the wing depth the Warriors sorely lack with great scoring and solid defence.

Assimilate Wiggins Perfectly

Andrew Wiggins will determine how successful the Warriors are next season. If he fills out as the best third scorer in the league and plays elite defence, the Warriors make the finals. However, if he persists with the play that everyone saw in Minnesota, the Warriors tap out by the conference finals. Wiggins should feast on easier looks than ever and it is just a matter of how focussed he is. If he can bring the focus every night, he could be a big part of a championship team next season.

Add Elite Talent From The Draft

Regardless of whether the Warriors pick in the top 5 or trade down, they need to get their draft pick right. Picking a player like Anthony Edwards or Haliburton high in the draft gives them a future building block. Lower down the draft, players like Saddiq Bey and Aaron Nesmith would be instant successes in the Warriors system. The Warriors need to ensure that they get talent that helps them now, and in the future.
