This Thursday, Microsoft reports that they have traced hacking attempts made by the Russians, Chinese and Iranians. The motif is to spy on people and groups working for the US 2020 presidential election.

They said that these Russian hackers also tried to breach the 2016 Democratic campaign.

On its website, Microsoft posted “The activity we are announcing today makes clear that foreign activity groups have stepped up their efforts targeting the 2020 election,”.

Chris Krebs said in a statement to CNN that till now they have not found any impact on election systems.

It looks like hackers are targeting both Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s campaigns.

Tom Burt of Microsoft said that just like in 2016, “Strontium is launching campaigns to harvest people’s log-in credentials or compromise their accounts, presumably to aid in intelligence gathering or disruption operations”.

Microsoft is yet to report on the number of organisations targeted by the Chinese and the Iranian groups. However, we do know that Chinese hackers are targeting Biden’s campaign.
Also, Microsoft did announce sometime between May and June that Iranian hackers did try to access the accounts of Trump’s administration officials and staff of Trump’s campaign.
These hacking attempts have heightened this years election security concerns considering the high numbers of mail-in-ballots due to the pandemic. An international body has called this “the most challenging” U.S. election in recent decades.
The company has visibility into these efforts because its software is both ubiquitous and highly rated for security.
They did not address whether U.S. officials who manage elections or operate voting systems are targeted by the hackers this year.
