Michael Irvin’s Early Life

On March 5, 1966, Michael Jerome Irvin was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Growing up in a Christian home with 16 siblings, Michael excelled as a football player for his high school squad. Irvin had a great high school season, and the University of Miami strongly recruited him.

Following his acceptance of their offer, Jimmy Johnson served as his college coach. Michael broke several school marks while he was a player for the Hurricanes, including most career receptions, most receiving yards, and most touchdown receptions.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Michael Irvin with the eleventh pick in the first round of the 1988 NFL draft. Michael signed a four-year, $1.875 million contract that included a $750,000 signing bonus. In 1992, he signed another three-year, $3.75 million contract extension with the Cowboys. In 1995, Michael agreed to a 5-year, $12.3 million contract, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players.

In the season opener that year, Michael got off to a great start by scoring his first touchdown. Over the ensuing period, Irvin kept up his strong play, but the Cowboys were a losing club. He nearly became a Raiders player after suffering an injury. The 90s saw an improvement in the team’s play, and in 1995 Michael broke several franchise records.
