Laura Gayle Coates was born on July 11, 1980, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. She has been largely silent regarding her roots, other than the fact that she was born into an African-American household.
She is a devoted Christian, and no one in her family has ever heard of a sister named Tracey Coates. Laura had wanted to play hockey since she was a child. Laura attended and graduated from high school in her hometown. Her undergraduate studies were at Princeton University, where she majored in public and international affairs.

Laura joined Faegre & Benson LLP as an associate after graduating from Minnesota Law School. She stayed there before becoming an associate at Kaskowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP. She only worked for the corporation briefly before leaving to become a federal prosecutor for the US Department of Justice.
Her civil rights trial practice focused on voting rights. Through promotion, she became Columbia’s Assistant US Attorney. She handles narcotics trafficking, sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse cases. CNN hired her in 2016 as a senior legal analyst.
She has been a CNN employee for years and started a SiriusXM radio show in 2017. Laura Coates’ SiriusXM Urban View show will air in 2021. She writes and speaks about social and economic empowerment and the law. Washington Post, Boston Herald, and other major newspapers and magazines have published her articles.
