On November 6, 1979, Lamar Joseph Odom was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City, New York. Odom experienced a difficult upbringing. At twelve, his mother passed away from colon cancer. His father was a heroin user. His grandmother Mildred reared him.
At the three high schools he attended—Christ The King Regional High School, Redemption Christian Academy, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School—Odom excelled as a basketball player. Odom won three 1997 awards: Parade Player of the Year, Parada All-American First Team, and USA Today All-USC First Team.
Odom considered going straight into the NBA after high school, but he ultimately decided he wasn’t ready. Odom received funding from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas scholarship.
Nevertheless, the school canceled his scholarship when certain concerns about his ACT result surfaced, along with his arrest for allegedly attempting to promote prostitutes. Instead, Odom enrolled at the University of Rhode Island, where he played one season in 1998-99 before opting for the NBA Draft.

Lamar Odom Career
The Los Angeles Clippers selected this 6 foot 10 inch forward with the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, following his freshman year at the University of Rhode Island. His outstanding rookie campaign earned him a spot on the 2000 NBA All-Rookie First Team. He played for the Miami Heat with another young rookie, Dwyane Wade, in the 2003–04 season.
After the campaign, Lamar was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for All-Star Shaquille O’Neal, along with Caron Butler and Brian Grant. From 2004 to 2011, he was a player for the Lakers. In 2011–12, he was a member of the Dallas Mavericks; in 2012–2013, he returned to the Clippers.
Odom signed a two-month contract with the option to extend it for the duration of the season on February 18, 2014, with Laboral Kutxa Baskonia of the Spanish League and the Euroleague. A month later, a back issue prevented him from fulfilling his contract. He only made two appearances for Baskonia. He finished the 2013–2014 NBA season as a member of the New York Knicks.
He played for the United States national basketball teams in both the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, where they won gold, and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where they averaged 9.3 points per game and won a bronze medal.
