On Monday, the LA County sheriff, Villanueva, challenges LeBron James to match and double the reward money being offered for details on Compton gunman. On the weekend, the said gunman ambushed and shot two LA deputies.

In the interview with KABC Radio, Villanueva said the reward money is now $175,000. It’s a combination of donations of county’s $100,000 and two private individuals’  $75,000.

Villanueva extends the challenge to LeBron James.

He says, “I know you care about law enforcement. You expressed a very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer-involved shootings and the impact that it has on the African-American community.”

He says he appreciates what he said, but at the same time, “we need to appreciate that respect for life goes across all professions.”

Details On The Weekend Ambush

The two deputies were in their parked police vehicle when the man came to the passenger’s side and fired multiple shots. The deputies are struck in the head and are critically wounded.

The good news is that both of them are expected to recover.

But the gunman hasn’t yet been captured, and the motive is undetermined.

The shooting took place in Compton, an area having a large Black population. It has long been a hotspot for racial tension and mistrust of police.

On Saturday, countless marched to the Sheriff’s Department South LA station. The protest was for the fatal shootings of one Black man and one Black teenager in 2018.

Villanueva didn’t point to anyone in particular, but many politicians and athletes have recently harshly criticized the police. Many called for defunding departments in response to the killing of George Floyd and the shooting of Blake in Kenosha.

This is because James has been highly vocal about police shootings involving Black people. After the Blake shooting incident, James said that Black people in America are “terrified.”

He also tweeted his frustrations with police shootings.

“And y’all wonder why we say what we say about the Police…This is…so wrong and so sad!! Feel so sorry for him, his family and OUR PEOPLE!! We want JUSTICE.”

Till now, it remains unclear if James is aware of Villanueva’s challenge. Because messages to the LeBron James Foundation has no response.

Villanueva says “Let’s see what he does,…I’ll be very curious to see what his response is, if any.”
