Katie Sackhoff was born on April 8, 1980, in Portland, Oregon. Her father Dennis was a land developer, and her mother Mary coordinated English as a second language (ESL) school programs. Her parents reared her in St. Helens, Oregon, where she later graduated in 1998 from Sunset High School in Beaverton.
She had participated in competitive swimming throughout school, but a knee ailment kept her from going pro. After that, she started going to yoga classes and exploring other hobbies like acting.
