John Madden made NFL history when he became the league’s youngest head coach. The Raiders beat the Minnesota Vikings in a thrilling overtime game in Super Bowl XI after employing him.
Eventually, he surpassed every other coach in history who had won 100 games or more and became the most successful coach ever.
John Madden transitioned into broadcasting after his retirement as a coach and began providing weekly audio commentary on NFL games. For nearly thirty years he kept up his career in radio and television broadcasting.

John Madden had heart block, stomach ulcers, and joint problems
John Madden, like the rest of us, had to deal with a number of health issues during the course of his life. According to accounts, his joint problems worsened and became chronic in his old age. His stomach ulcers were another factor that led to his resignation from coaching in 1979.
After leading the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl title in 1979, Madden announced in January 1979 that he was retiring from coaching after 10 seasons. He put his decision down to a bothersome ulcer and burnout from his job.
After retiring, he put his attention on broadcasting, although he eventually stopped doing that as well due to heart surgery in 2015. It is stated that on the day before Thanksgiving of that year, he began experiencing heart problems. While at home, the coach began to experience respiratory difficulties.
A doctor was contacted, and an ambulance was sent to transfer him to the neighboring Pleasanton Valley Care center. Doctors at UCSF Medical Center were able to perform open-heart surgery on him after he was transferred there. To be precise, it was Sunday, November 30, 2015.

Virginia Fields was John Madden’s wife for over fifty years. Pismo Beach is where they had their first encounter. At the time, they were both graduate students at Polytechnic University working toward their Masters degrees.
They tied the knot soon after, and now live happily in Pleasanton, California, with their two sons, Joseph and Michael.
