Joey Jones is the son of Joseph Edgar Jones and Joyce Marie Jones. He was born in Dalton, Georgia, on July 21, 1986. His mother was a stay-at-home wife, and his father worked as a bricklayer. Despite being adopted when she was seven years old, he remains close to his sister Marsha Jones Dalton.
Joey Jones ran track and field and played football at Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton. Having excelled academically, he became the first member of his family to graduate from high school and enrol in college in 2004. He spent several semesters attending Dalton State College, where he intermittently attended classes. He then gets a job driving a forklift, but he ultimately decides to enlist in the Marines since he is disillusioned with the life that lies ahead of him.
Following his enlistment, Jones headed to Parris Island, South Carolina, for basic training. He served in the US Marine Corps for eight years after completing basic training. As a bomb technician or explosive ordnance disposal specialist, his job involved disarming and destroying improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.
Jones served two combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. In his second deployment, he assisted the military in disarming more than eighty IEDs in Afghanistan. Regretfully, he stepped on an IED during a disarming operation, which detonated and seriously injured him.
