Joey Jones is the son of Joseph Edgar Jones and Joyce Marie Jones. He was born in Dalton, Georgia, on July 21, 1986. His mother was a stay-at-home wife, and his father worked as a bricklayer. Despite being adopted when she was seven years old, he remains close to his sister Marsha Jones Dalton.

Joey Jones ran track and field and played football at Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton. As a bomb technician or explosive ordnance disposal specialist, his job involved disarming and destroying improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

Jones served two combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. In his second deployment, he assisted the military in disarming more than eighty IEDs in Afghanistan. Regretfully, he stepped on an IED during a disarming operation, which detonated and seriously injured him.
