Jo Koy Early Life
Joseph Glenn Herbert, better known as Jo Koy, was born in Tacoma, Washington, on June 2, 1971. When Koy’s mother, a Filipino rock band manager, married him, his American father was serving in the US Air Force in the Philippines. Jo’s mother reared all of her children alone after the couple’s divorce at the age of 13. Soon after he graduated from Tacoma High School, the family relocated to Tacoma, Washington, and later to Los Vegas.
To be closer to Jo’s sick grandma, the family relocated to Los Vegas. The moniker Jo’s family gave him when he was a child inspired his stage name. Jo typically tells tales about his mother during his comic shows, attributing his acting and humorous abilities to her.
His mother supported him in doing spontaneous performances for his friends and family as well as entering talent events at school. Jo enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to start college. But he decided to drop out of school to devote all of his time to a full-time comedy career.
