After dropping out of college, Jefferies returned to his hometown of Sydney, Australia, where he launched his stand-up comedy career. He assumed the stage name “Jim Jeffries”, but modified the last name to “Jefferies” to prevent confusion with a similarly named American artist. When he first started doing stand-up, he mostly just did one-liners.
