Psaki started her political career in 2001, working for Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack’s and Senator Tom Harkin’s reelection campaigns. She worked as John Kerry’s deputy press secretary for his presidential campaign a few years later. Psaki worked for US Representative Joseph Crowley as his director of communications from 2005 to 2006; she was also the DCCC’s regional press secretary.
Psaki first got to know Barack Obama while she was his traveling press secretary during his 2008 presidential campaign. She joined the White House as the deputy press secretary upon his election as president. Psaki received a promotion to deputy director of communications at the end of 2009.
