James Gandolfini was born on September 18, 1961, in Westwood, New Jersey, to James Joseph Gandolfini Jr. His mother, Santa, worked in food service at a high school, and his father, James, was a World War II Purple Heart winner who worked as a bricklayer, cement mason, and head custodian.

James Sr. was born in Italy, and Santa was of Italian descent even though he was born in the United States and raised in Naples. James grew up with two younger sisters, Leta and Johanna, and Roman Catholic parents.

James Gandolfini Education

Gandolfini completed his high school education at Park Ridge in 1979. James was known as the “Class Flirt” in his senior yearbook and was active in basketball and theater while in high school.

He received a BA in Communications from Rutgers University in 1983. He then spent two years at The Gately Poole Conservatory, studying under Kathryn Gately and the Meisner acting method after relocating to New York.

Tony Soprano is a character played by James Gandolfini in the highly acclaimed HBO show “The Sopranos.” He is a crime boss with a family. Gandolfini was recognized for his work on the show, which ran from 1999 to 2007.

He won three Primetime Emmys, an American Film Institute Award, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Television Critics Association Award. In addition to “12 Angry Men” (1997), “Cinema Verite” (2011), and “Nicky Deuce” (2013), James has appeared in three TV movies.

He interviewed ten wounded and recently returned warriors for the HBO documentary “Alive Day Memoirs: Home from Iraq,” which sought to uncover the veterans’ perspectives on war and violence. Gandolfini produced the HBO documentaries “Wartorn: 1861-2010” and “Hemingway & Gellhorn”

Gandolfini has been in a lot of movies, like “True Romance,” “Crimson Tide,” “Get Shorty,” “8mm,” “The Taking of Pelham 123,” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” A casting director wanted James to try out for the role of Tony Soprano on “The Sopranos” after seeing him play a mobster named Virgil in the 1993 movie “True Romance.”

Posthumous releases of “Enough Said” and “The Drop,” Gandolfini’s final efforts, followed his debut performance in “Shock! Shock! Shock!” from 1987. The romantic comedy “Enough Said,” in which James and Julia Louis-Dreyfus also starred, was nominated for awards from the Screen Actors Guild, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics Association, the Independent Spirit Awards, the London Film Critics Circle, and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Society after James’ death.
