Jack Steve Squirek was an American football player. Squirek’s most well-known play was his interception in Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Redskins.
The linebacker intercepted Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann before he could run it five yards for a touchdown after reading Washington’s screenplay. With 12 seconds remaining in the first half, Ray Guy’s 27-yard punt stopped Washington at their 12-yard line, halting a Raiders drive that had stalled after Jim Plunkett’s incomplete third-down pass.
The Raiders led 21–3 at the half after Squirek intercepted Joe Theismann’s screen ball and returned it for a touchdown on the following play. The Raiders proceeded to triumph, 38–9. Throughout his career, he started eight out of 55 games and recorded just one interception during the regular season.
