Anthony Edwards Family and Childhood

Atlanta, Georgia, played a significant role in Anthony Edwards’ early years. His father gave him the loving nickname “Ant” when he was three years old. His love of football throughout his early years led him to play a variety of positions, including cornerback, running back, and quarterback.

He was one of the nation’s top Pop Warner running backs by the age of ten after he succeeded in youth football with the Atlanta Vikings.

But after seeing his brothers play, basketball’s attraction finally piqued Edwards’ curiosity, and his attention began to shift. In the eighth grade, Edwards lost his grandmother, Shirley, and mother, Yvette, to cancer in eight months.

Given that both women died on the fifth day of the month, Edwards took on the No. 5 basketball jersey in honor of them. Growing up with his brother, Antoine, and sister, Antoinette, who had joint legal custody, Edwards took comfort in using his jersey number to pay tribute to his late mother and grandmother.
