East High School is almost back in session, and it appears that the most popular girl in class will be returning. Disney+ confirmed that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series would return for Season 3 on November 12, but the show’s breakout star remained a mystery. It was unclear at the time whether Olivia Rodrigo would return to the stage after the success of her debut album Sour. However, we now know Nini will return… but not in the same way as in the previous two seasons. HSMTMTS Season 3 Release Date
At the moment, little is known about a specific release date, but it has been confirmed that filming began in January 2022, so the new season should be available sometime in 2022.

Will Olivia Rodrigo return?
Fans wondered if Olivia, who plays Nini, would return after her global success as a newly-minted pop star. Olivia will step down from her lead role to a recurring role in season 3 according to Entertainment Tonight. It is unknown how many episodes she will appear in.
Joshua Bassett, who plays Ricky, was asked if he was nervous to return to set for the upcoming season after his alleged drama with Olivia on The Zach Sang Show on December 22, 2021. “I’m not, I’m very excited,” said the actor and singer-songwriter. “I think we’ve got a really, really awesome season planned, and… it’s going to be a blast.”
HSMTMTS Season 3 Cast
Expect some new faces to join the Wildcats for the upcoming musical, as well as some familiar faces, according to a Disney+ spokesperson.
Season 1 and 2 stars Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Olivia Rodrigo are all set to return (via Deadline).

HSMTMTS Season 3 Plot
With East High’s withdrawal from the Alan Menken Awards for High School Musical Theatre at the conclusion of HSMTMTS season 2, High Academic Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3 could focus on the academic’s upcoming winter musical as the students begin a new school year.
Tim Federle, the showrunner of HSMTMTS, told Hollywood Life what we can expect in season 3: “I usually appreciate picking up where you left off because, in my opinion, it is the essence of today’s convenient streaming TV.” Season 3 has a few ideas, but they all need to start with a green light, so I’m hoping for the chance.”
Ricky and Nini are no longer together, Gina and E.J. are dating, Big Red and Ashlyn are dating, Kourtney and Howie are dating, and Carlos and Seb are dating, but all of this could change in the coming season.
Ricky and Lily appear to be on the verge of a relationship in Season 3. Nini will also begin writing new songs with Gina’s brother, Jamie. Gina and E.J., on the other hand, appear to have settled down.
We’ll also learn whether Mr. Mazarra will accept Miss Jenn’s new job offer and start dating her.
