Alaska State Troopers have announced that the Glenn Highway was reopened on Thursday close to the Knik River bridges following a massive pile-up. This incident, involving 37 vehicles, resulted in injuries to over a dozen individuals and led to the highway being shut down for several hours.
On Thursday morning, Troopers first reported via social media that the southbound lanes of the Glenn Highway were shut down at the interchange of Parks/Glenn following an accident near Reflections Lake and the bridges. This area serves as a boundary line between the jurisdiction of the troopers and the Anchorage police.
Troops stated in an online dispatch on Thursday afternoon that the crashes were initially reported at 10:35 a.m., following a southbound car’s harsh brakes to avoid colliding with the preceding vehicle.
“The braking vehicle lost traction on the icy bridge and began spinning,” troopers said in the dispatch. “Another vehicle in the same southbound lane then collided with the spinning vehicle. There was dense fog at the time of the collision, with only one vehicle-length of visibility. Nearly a dozen vehicles continued to collide with the initially involved vehicles. With the limited visibility, additional vehicles then began a chain reaction of rear-end collisions, in trying to avoid hitting one another.”
The Glenn was initially blocked in both directions while troopers responded. At approximately 1:15 p.m., according to trooper spokesperson Justin Freeman, northbound lanes were once again available. He stated that the highway would fully reopen at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday.

The director of emergency services for the Mat-Su Borough, Ken Barkley, stated on Thursday afternoon that following the collisions, 13 patients—none of whom had life-threatening injuries—were transported to nearby hospitals by ambulance. He claimed that because of the ongoing cold snap this week, visibility around the bridges was quite bad due to sunlight striking ice fog, which remained frosty at midday.
“It was ice fog and just the ice on the bridges,” Barkley said. During the shutdown, southbound traffic was sent via Palmer and directed to the Old Glenn Highway.
