Gladys Knight Family and Personal Life
Gladys Knight had a busy life. She got married four times and has three kids. She first got married to James Newman, another music person, when she was just 16 in 1960. They had a sad start when they lost their first child but then had two more, a son James in 1962, and a daughter Kenya in 1963.
Newman had drug problems and left when Knight was 20. They ended their marriage in 1973, after being together for more than 12 years. Knight took a break from her music work to spend time with her family, while her group, the Pips, kept on performing.
In the 1960s, Knight and her family went to live in Detroit. Her kids went to a Catholic school. Knight and Newman ended their marriage in 1973. Newman passed away a few years after that. Knight then married Barry Hankerson, and they had a son, Shanga, in 1976. They split up in 1979 and fought over who should take care of their son.
In 1995, Knight got married to Les Brown, but they split up in 1997. She then fixed her gambling issue with help and joined a new church in 1997, which changed her music.

Her son Jimmy looked after her work until he passed away in 1999. Knight then married William McDowell in 2001. They now have a big family with 17 grandkids and ten great-grandkids.
