The Walking Dead a popular show on AMC, ended on November 20 with its final episode, “Rest in Peace.” The show ran for 12 years and 11 seasons. But the 90-minute ending of the flagship show didn’t give fans much closure, since spinoffs following fan-favorite characters are already being made.
The Walking Dead: Dead City’s teaser trailer just came out, giving fans a look at one of the most shocking zombie-fighting teams heading to New York City.
The six-episode spinoff series, which is likely to come out in April 2023, is about Maggie (Lauren Cohan, The Boy) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Grey’s Anatomy). It takes place two years after the end of the main show.
Since Negan joined the show and brutally killed Maggie’s husband, Glenn, they have been at odds with each other for a long time (Steven Yeun, Minari). Since Negan became a good guy, Rick and Michonne have been able to work well enough together – which is surprising – that they are now both in Dead City.
In the Dead City teaser, Maggie and Negan go to post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which has been cut off from the rest of the country for a long time. The teaser shows the two of them working together and even shows them walking by graffiti that says “Dawn Lincoln Center Come Kill With Us.” Eli Jorné is the showrunner for (The Walking Dead), and the official synopsis says, “The dead and the people who live there have made New York City their own world full of chaos, danger, beauty, and terror.”
In a recent statement, franchise architect Scott Gimple said, “Eli has made a crazy, beautiful, dirty madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show who want to see a new and crazy part of the TWD Universe.”
“Lauren and Jeffrey have always worked well together, and now we’re taking that to the next level with a series that will push these characters to their limits with the world and with each other. We’re all excited to take you on a brand-new, never-before-seen TWD adventure.
Dead City isn’t the first time AMC has done something outside of its flagship show to explore the world of the dead, and it won’t be the last. Fear of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which is basically a teen-focused version of the show, and Tales of the Walking Dead, an anthology series, were all made because the show was so popular.
In addition to Dead City, there will be two more shows that continue the story of The Walking Dead. In Darryl Dixon, Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints) will play the fan-favorite role of Rick Dixon, and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln, Love Actually) and Michonne (Danai Gurira, Black Panther) will have their own show called Rick & Michonne.
