DeMeco Ryans Early Life
On July 28, 1984, Ryans was born in Bessemer, Alabama. He played linebacker in high school football at Jess Lanier High School. Ryans did well enough in his final season to be considered a three-star recruit and receive an offer to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide, his home state.

After being released in 2016, DeMeco was unable to avoid football for very long. In 2017, he was hired by the San Francisco 49ers to serve as a defensive quality control coach. He had been the team’s inside linebackers coach by 2018. Ultimately, Ryans assumed the position of defensive coordinator in 2021 after Robert Salah left.
After his first season as defensive coordinator, Ryans was given the chance to become the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, but he turned down a second interview. He had no idea that this would turn out to be the best move of his career—he was about to enter his best coordinating season and get to go back home.
DeMeco Ryans Playing Career
Ryans was a backup linebacker and member of the special teams while attending Alabama from 2002 to 2005. But in Alabama, he became more and more popular every year, and in 2005, he was named the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year. Ryans was named the defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl in his last game at Alabama. And he was an All-American without dispute.
In the 2006 NFL Draft, Ryans was selected by the Houston Texans with the 33rd overall pick. Then, in an eventual career-long trend, Ryans defied the odds to start as a middle linebacker in his rookie campaign. In his debut season, he racked up 126 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one interception.
In terms of statistics, he would have had his best season during his nine-season NFL career. In 2006, Ryans finished second in the league in tackles and was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Ryans was named to his first Pro Bowl and made the first team as an All-Pro linebacker in his second season.
